The word for "no" (ไม่ /mâj/) sounds similar to the word for asking a yes-no question (ไหม /máj/), but notice how the tones are different. Also, the word "no" comes before the verb, while the question marker goes at the end of the sentence.

In normal speech, the /aj/ sound often turns into /e/. You'll often hear people say /mê/ for "no" instead of /mâj/.
